Ruby red/rednesday: important words.

The weather is Auckland is warm, and when it rains, it pours. People joke that you can hear the lawn growing. Many people mow their own lawn, and some employ men to mow their lawn. Besides the grass clippings, there are hedges and trees to be trimmed.

What do you do with your green rubbish/ organic waste?

The organic waste stream is a mix of garden or green waste and food waste (putrescibles) that can be composted and used as a soil conditioner.

Compost is the end result of controlled aerobic decomposition or a mix of green waste (rich in nitrogen) and brown waste (rich in carbon).

A number of private companies provide a garden bag and bin collection service. All bags and bins vary in size and you can choose how often they are collected.

I was walking along Pt Chevalier Road when I saw this truck. I looked around and saw no one around so I whipped out my camera. But I was spotted by two friendly and good looking guys. One of them asked me why I was talking photos of his truck. I told him, I was blogging, and he said don't take the name of his truck. I am sure his employer won't sack him.

In fact, they were very good PR person for this company which is doing a great job for the environment. They collect our green waste and recycle and reuse to help grow healthy plants in our city. Ka Pai and Paki Paki.

Red: Buzzy Bee

This is a children's ride on machine found in shopping malls and in this case in the Auckland International airport. This Buzzy bee was an original wooden toy. When princess Diana visited New Zealand when Prince William was a baby, the manufacturers gave one to her. All the mums wanted to buy one for their babies too.

It is a pull along and the wings flap. It is our icon.

Croquet: Kiwi friendliness and ingenuity

These photos epitomises New Zealand's friendliness and ingenuity. I was walking round my new neighborhood when I saw this sign for bowling and croquet. Croquet gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. My Dad went to London in the 1950s, and he played croquet. Croquet conjured pictures of victorian ladies in white gloves, and long dresses. I wondered why Dad and his friend from Gibraltar would play such a feminine game. He replied it was a game of precision.

I eventually got to try a game when I went to Christchurch. It wasn't easy, and a great game for friends.

On Friday, as I was taking photos at the club, this gentleman Frank came, he invited me to come and play, and to the tournament that was taking place during the weekend. I commented about his mallet. He said," I made it myself. It is better than the bought ones."

Croquet is a lawn game, played both as a recreational pastime and as a competitive sport. It involves hitting plastic or wooden balls with a mallet through hoops (often called "wickets" in the US) embedded into the grass playing court.

As a Kiwi Mum, I have connected with these blogs, and was invited to do a review of the SunRice. I am given a sample to try out and I do not receive any financial returns.

SunRice has launched three delicious new flavours in their Quick Cups range and are looking for blogging Mums interested in reviewing them. There are 3 flavours: Egg Fried Rice, Teriyaki Rice and Chicken Rice.

Cups are placed into the microwave and in just 40 seconds a perfect mound of fluffy Basmati rice, with real veggies and loads of flavour, is ready for serving. They’re perfect as snacks for kids – or as part of a balanced meal for your little ones.

They have marketed these rice cups as perfect as snacks for kids or part of a balanced meal for your little ones.

I have tried all 3 flavours. They have very strong flavours, the best is egg fried rice. The Teriyaki was very sweet, and the chicken rice too salty.

It is convenient, just pop in the micro wave for less than one minute, and you have a snack. The portions are small, ie child size.

Would children like such a snack after school? I don't know. Would mums like to serve a snack where grains of rice might be scattered all over the place?

I would say, instead of marketing SunRice as a snack to children, it could be marketed as a bigger portion as a lunch in the office lunch room.

A matryoshka doll, or babushka doll is a Russian nesting doll (Russian: Матрёшка) which is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin, who was a folk crafts painter at Abramtsevo. Traditionally the outer layer is a woman, dressed in a sarafan, a long and shapeless traditional Russian peasant jumper dress. The figures inside may be of either gender; the smallest, innermost doll is typically a baby lathed from a single piece of wood

I first saw a set of matryoshka dolls in my friend Olwyn's house in New Zealand. When I saw this set in a souvenir shop in Singapore, I felt very emotional. Olwyn had been very good to me. I bought this and found it was made in China, not in Russia.

I brought this to school, and one day, my Somalian student Ahmed said he had a set and would I buy it for $5. I told him to make sure his mum was ok about it. I didn't want to rip him off. So he brought it to school, and he was very happy to have $5. His was a set of Saudi Arabian dolls, I didn't exactly want a set of Saudi Arabian Russian dolls, but he was disappointed if I didn't buy them. I also hope his mum didn't pay too much for them.

When I took the photo, I didn't have time to open up the nest of the Russian dolls. You will have to imagine what they are like. They are all the same.

I went to Christchurch to visit my old friends. They took me to Loburn, to visit Ivan and Sandy Campbell. We were all excited as we drove to North Canterbury to Loburn Abbey airfield, as we knew we were going to fly in this special plane. At the Hanger were half finished planes.

Ruby Red/Rednesday: 3a Copy & Design.

Red is an auspicious color to the Chinese. It was a pleasure working with the lovely people in this company. I chose blue for my book, blue in remembrance of my baby boy Andrew who died in 1989. Without him, there would be no book.

Writing a book is like having a baby. You don't do it alone. I am very grateful to have many people helping me from it's conception,Robyn Dove encouraging me to write, friends from as far as America like Ginny, Betsy and George, Ladyfi from Sweden, Reader Wil from Holland, Diane from Australia, and many others.
